Elder Hall

Tracting an apartment complex and almost an entire month in Layton already.

Also included here, in an email to his father, Elder Hall shares the story of the song I am a Child of God.

Subject: Good Week

This week was good, as always. It’s warming up a little here in Layton, hopefully it stays that way. Elder Blaylock and I are trying our best to find people. We had a surprise a few days ago, there actually is a small apartment complex in our area. Our boundaries are weird, so we didn’t know it before. We have been tracting them.
The transfer is half way over, that was quick. I’ve been in Layton almost a month.
Hope everyone had a good Valentine’s Day.
Have a good week!
Elder Hall

“I Am A Child of God
1. I am a child of God, And he has sent me here, Has given me an earthly home With parents kind and dear.
[Chorus] Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, Help me find the way. Teach me all that I must do To live with him someday.
2. I am a child of God, And so my needs are great; Help me to understand his words Before it grows too late.
[Chorus] Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, Help me find the way. Teach me all that I must do To live with him someday.
3. I am a child of God. Rich blessings are in store; If I but learn to do his will I’ll live with him once more.
[Chorus] Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, Help me find the way. Teach me all that I must do To live with him someday.”

In an email to his father Elder Hall shares the story of the divine inspiration behind the beloved song I am a Child of God. Check out this video and give the song a listen.

[…] yesterday when we were attending sacrament meeting a member of the Stake High Council spoke of the song. His aunt Mildred wrote the lyrics for it. In 1956 or so, President (I think Benson) wanted a primary song that conveyed children’s heavenly purpose or something. So he asked the General Primary President to make one. She didn’t really make songs so she asked Naomi Randall (for text) and Mildred Pettit (for music, she also wrote The Reverent song). Sister Randall lived in Ogden Utah, and Sister Pettit lived in Pasadena, California. They both fasted and prayed and talked over the telephone to try to come up with the song. For a while they couldn’t think of anything and Sister Pettit even took her journal everywhere, so if she thought of music she could write it down.

One night she had a dream where these primary children are singing this song, and she woke up in the middle of the night and wrote down the notes. That morning Sister Crandall also had the same dream and she wrote down the lyrics. So they gave that song to the President of the Church and that’s where we get I Am a Child of God.
It was pretty cool.
